NEW YEAR’S DAY was their last full day in the city alone. Since they had been going at such a pace all week in their effort to see everything, José suggested they spend that day at a slower pace. They had been up quite late the previous night, so they slept in on the first morning of the new year. Breakfast was made up of bagels, toasted and eaten at the kitchen table while they looked at the morning newspaper.

They took advantage of the extra-large bathtub in one of the bathrooms and indulged in a bath together, with much of the time spent with José lying back in Phillip’s arms. It was a toss-up as to which of them felt happier.

They did go out during the afternoon, just to walk around a little and to pick up a couple of things. Otherwise they lay on the couch snuggled together, reading or napping or watching some mindless TV. Even when Phillip’s parents returned home from Vermont that afternoon, they didn’t change anything. Phillip’s parents had been traveling all day, so the guys were left largely alone for the evening.

Growing up, José had not had the television experience. His family’s accommodations usually didn’t include television of any sort, so all of the cultural references many people used that were related to television were lost on him. Over the following week, though, Phillip introduced him to some of the things he had missed. Between his family’s DVD collection and his own access to online recordings of shows, the two of them spent the equivalent of several days vegged out in front of the television.

Where the previous week had been a busy one of frenzied explorations and new experiences, the first week of the new year was more sedate, more relaxed, less rushed. They went out and did things each day, but they proceeded at a much more reasonable pace. Each day they might do one thing before returning home to read, snuggle, make love, and watch mindless television.

Finally, though, all good things must come to an end. So too did their winter break draw to a close. It was with a great deal of reluctance that they packed the car on their last morning and headed back to New England for the start of another semester. They both loved the school and loved the opportunity to learn new things, but their time together over the holidays had been so perfect they both hated to see that break come to a close.

As Phillip drove north that afternoon, José looked out the window at the scenery passing by.

“What’s going on inside that head of yours?” Phillip asked as he drove.

“Not much. A lot. I was just thinking about everything we did, everything we saw. All the places we went and how much I loved it.”

“Except for New Year’s Eve.”

“We will not speak of that night again. Agreed?” José joked.

“Agreed.”

“You showed me so much. I had a great time. Thank you for the best Christmas ever. It was different and better than anything I could have imagined.
